New Zealand lose Chapman and Ravindra for the full ODI series against India
New Zealand will be without Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra for the whole of their five-match one-day series against India, with Tim Seifert, Henry Nicholls and Dean Foxcroft drafted in as cover
New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Monday that both batters have been ruled out of the series, which begins in Auckland on Wednesday. Mark Chapman is rehabilitating a left hamstring injury, while Rachin Ravindra is still managing a right shoulder problem that had already kept him out of the T20I leg of the tour.
The two absences leave Mitchell Santner without a pair of established middle-order batters at the start of a long home summer, one that also carries a two-Test World Test Championship series against India later in November.
India come into the one-day leg having taken the T20I series 3-2, and have made a change of their own after Prasidh Krishna was withdrawn and Auqib Nabi added for the first three matches.
Chapman faces another fortnight out
New Zealand Cricket said a recent MRI showed the left-hander needed "another two weeks of rehabilitation before he is fully fit to return to the field".
Head coach Rob Walter said he had spoken to the batter during the week. "I caught up with Mark last week and although he's disappointed he's working hard to get back on the field," Walter said.
Chapman, a left-hander, has been a regular in New Zealand's white-ball middle order and was part of the squad named for this series before the injury ruled him out.
Ravindra held back with the Tests in mind
Ravindra's shoulder has been slower to settle. New Zealand Cricket said it required more recovery time before he was able to field at full capacity, and the injury has now cost him both white-ball legs of the India series.
Walter said the shoulder "hasn't quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably" in white-ball cricket, and that New Zealand were unwilling to take undue risks with the Test series falling later this month.
"Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it's a shame they have to miss this series," Walter said.
Seifert, Nicholls and Foxcroft called in
Tim Seifert, originally named only for the fourth and fifth matches, now stays with the squad for all five.
Henry Nicholls comes in for the first three one-dayers and Dean Foxcroft, who featured in New Zealand's recent one-day matches against the West Indies, for the last two.
Matt Henry rejoins the squad and will be assessed for fitness, while Matt Fisher, also picked initially for the closing games, remains available across the series as an additional bowling option.
Santner's two squads
New Zealand have named separate squads for the two halves of the series, 15 players for the first three matches and 13 for the last two.
For the first three one-day internationals: Mitchell Santner (capt), Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Will Young.
For the fourth and fifth: Mitchell Santner (capt), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Mitch Hay (wk), Nick Kelly, Tim Seifert, Blair Tickner, Will Young.
Five one-dayers before the Tests
The series opens in Auckland on 4 November, before moving to Wellington on 7 November and Hamilton on 10 November.
Mount Maunganui stages the last two matches, on 13 and 15 November, after which the sides turn to the two Tests that close out the tour.
The first of the five one-day internationals begins in Auckland on Wednesday.
