Ajinkya Rahane Sustains Hand Injury During Win Against Delhi Capitals

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane will undergo medical evaluation on Wednesday to determine the extent of a hand injury he sustained during his team’s 14-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC).

Rahane downplayed the issue at the post-match presentation, saying, “Not bad. I’ll be okay. I’ll be fine.” According to teammate Anukul Roy, Rahane received “a couple of stitches,” and the injury is expected to heal within “two to three days.” KKR’s next fixture is against Rajasthan Royals on May 4 at home.

The incident occurred while Rahane was fielding at short cover. A powerful shot from Faf du Plessis, off Andre Russell’s bowling, struck Rahane on the right hand and deflected to mid-off. He left the field immediately and did not return, with his hand later seen heavily strapped.

With vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer already substituted out for Vaibhav Arora under the Impact Player rule, Sunil Narine stepped up to lead the side for the final nine overs of the innings. Narine made a decisive impact, dismissing Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, and du Plessis in his final two overs to help seal the win.

Reflecting on the match, Rahane credited Narine’s spell as pivotal. “We thought 204 was a good total, though maybe 15 runs short. But when you’re defending that kind of score, you’re always just a couple of wickets away—and that’s exactly what happened.”

With nine points from ten matches, KKR are currently placed seventh on the table. Rahane remains hopeful, recalling their successful late push to the playoffs in 2021. “That memory gives us belief, but we’re focused on staying in the present. We’ll take confidence from this win and move forward.”
