Abid Mushtaq produced a match-winning nine-wicket haul as North Zone defeated West Zone by 52 runs in a thrilling Duleep Trophy quarter-final at Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence.
The match was finely poised heading into the final day, with West Zone needing just 67 runs and North Zone requiring three wickets. However, it took only 6.3 overs for North Zone to complete the victory, with Mushtaq and Nishant Sindhu finishing off the West Zone lower order.
Mushtaq, the Jammu & Kashmir left-arm spin-bowling allrounder, was the standout performer. He claimed 5 for 39 in West Zone's first innings before returning with 4 for 60 in the second, ending the match with impressive figures of 9 for 99.
West Zone resumed the final day at 167 for 7, still within sight of their target. Mushtaq struck almost immediately, removing Tanush Kotian with a delivery that stayed low and crashed into middle stump.
Tushar Deshpande survived for 17 deliveries before attempting to attack Mushtaq. The resulting edge was taken by Abdul Samad at slip. Three balls later, Nishant Sindhu trapped Urvil Patel lbw for 25 to seal North Zone's place in the semi-finals.
North Zone had earlier built a crucial first-innings lead after being rescued by Anshul Kamboj, who scored 60 to lift his side from 161 for 7 to 251. Ayush Badoni also contributed with half-centuries in both innings, while Kamboj made an impact with the ball by removing Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian in quick succession.
Arshdeep Singh also impressed on his return to red-ball cricket, claiming four wickets in his first first-class appearance in almost a year. His late swing caused problems for West Zone's top order, particularly in the opening innings.
West Zone's second innings briefly threatened to turn the match in their favour when Musheer Khan and Ruturaj Gaikwad put together a century partnership. But Mushtaq's late intervention on the fourth day shifted momentum decisively back towards North Zone.
With the victory, North Zone advanced to the first semi-final, where they will face Tilak Varma's South Zone on August 30 at the Centre of Excellence. In the other semi-final, East Zone will meet defending champions Central Zone.
North Zone's victory was ultimately built around Mushtaq's outstanding spin bowling, which proved decisive on a pitch where spin accounted for 25 of the match's 25 wickets.
