Zimbabwe Eye Continued Dominance as Bangladesh Return Under Litton Das

Zimbabwe Eye Continued Dominance as Bangladesh Return Under Litton Das

Zimbabwe will look to extend their recent dominance over Bangladesh when the sides meet in the opening match of the tri-series in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Bangladesh will be led by the returning Litton Das, but uncertainty over their bowling combination, particularly Mustafizur Rahman’s place in the team, could complicate their preparations.
Bangladesh endured a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe earlier this year, losing both the one-off Test and the ODI series. Their campaign was further affected by an injury to fast bowler Nahid Rana, who has travelled to Perth for another medical assessment as he targets a return to competitive cricket later this month.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, arrive after a 3-0 ODI series defeat against Australia in September. Despite the result, they pushed the world champions hard in the final match, losing by just one wicket. Led by Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe will rely on experienced players such as Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor, alongside promising talents Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Newman Nyamhuri.
Litton Das returns to the Bangladesh ODI setup as captain after missing the away series against Zimbabwe in July. He replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz and will be expected to strengthen the team's batting after an impressive run of performances. Litton has scored 300 runs in nine ODI innings in 2026, making his return particularly important for Bangladesh.
The major selection concern for Bangladesh revolves around Mustafizur Rahman, who is under pressure following two disappointing performances at the Asian Games. With several bowling options available, Litton could consider leaving the experienced pacer out of the playing XI. Mystery spinner Aliss Al Islam is another potential option after impressing in the Bangladesh Premier League and making a promising T20I debut.
Zimbabwe's Brad Evans will be a key player to watch. He has taken 44 wickets in 2026 and recently claimed four wickets for 47 runs against Australia. Evans has also enjoyed success against Bangladesh, taking five wickets during their previous encounter in July.
The match will be played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, where conditions have generally favoured teams batting first in recent day-night ODIs. The average first-innings score across the last five ODIs at the venue has been 266, with teams batting first winning four of those matches. Heat and humidity could also influence the contest.
The fixture will mark the first Bangladesh-Zimbabwe ODI at a neutral venue in 20 years, with their previous such meeting taking place in Jaipur during the 2006 Champions Trophy. Zimbabwe will also make their first ODI appearance at the Abu Dhabi venue, while Bangladesh have won two of their six matches there.
With Zimbabwe looking to maintain their advantage and Bangladesh aiming for a fresh start under Litton, the opening encounter promises a competitive battle. The performance of Zimbabwe's pace attack and Bangladesh's decisions over their bowling combination could prove decisive.
