Wolvaardt eager to unleash South Africa’s youngsters in Zimbabwe T20I series

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt is looking forward to testing a new generation of players when her side takes on Zimbabwe in a five-match T20I series in Bulawayo.
The tour marks a significant opportunity for South Africa’s emerging players, with four uncapped cricketers included in a youthful squad. Fast-bowling allrounder Caitlin Wyngaard, batting allrounder Luyanda Nzuza, medium pacer Nthabiseng Nini and wicketkeeper-batter Jae-Leigh Filander are all in line to make their international debuts.
Wolvaardt is one of only a handful of players in the squad who featured at the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Annerie Dercksen, Karabo Meso and Kayla Reyneke are the other World Cup squad members, while several established players including Anneke Bosch, Miane Smit, Faye Tunnicliffe, Ayanda Hlubi, Eliz-Mari Marx and Nondumiso Shangase provide experience.
Filander was added to the squad as a late replacement for Sinalo Jafta, who withdrew from the tour after suffering a hamstring injury.
Wolvaardt said she was excited to see the newcomers take on a new opponent and show their abilities on the international stage. She also welcomed the opportunity to face an African team, noting that South Africa have rarely played against other teams from the continent.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi views the series as an important assessment period ahead of the future of South African women's cricket. He believes giving younger players international exposure will help identify those capable of pushing the established members of the squad for places.
The five-match T20I series will be played in Bulawayo, giving South Africa’s next generation a chance to make an impression while the team builds towards its long-term goals.
