New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke is close to returning to competitive cricket after recovering from a back injury that has kept him sidelined since July last year.
The 24-year-old suffered the injury during the first Test against Zimbabwe national cricket team in Bulawayo and has not played any competitive matches since. However, New Zealand national cricket team selector Gavin Larsen confirmed that the tall fast bowler is nearing the end of his rehabilitation and could be back in action as early as next month.
O’Rourke may return either with New Zealand A cricket team during their tour of Sri Lanka or with the senior side on their upcoming tour of Bangladesh. Both tours are expected to overlap with franchise tournaments like the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League.
Larsen said the management has taken a cautious approach to O’Rourke’s recovery to ensure the promising pacer returns fully fit. “Will’s been like a bull in a china shop wanting to get back on the park,” Larsen said, noting that the bowler is eager to return but understands the need for patience given his importance to the team.
New Zealand are preparing for a busy period of Test cricket later this year, including a home series against India national cricket team and away tours to England national cricket team and Australia national cricket team. With around ten major Test matches scheduled in a short span, keeping O’Rourke fit is considered crucial.
Meanwhile, Larsen also praised allrounder Cole McConchie, who impressed during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup after being drafted in as a late replacement for Michael Bracewell. His performances with both bat and ball highlighted the depth in New Zealand’s squad as the team continues to manage player workloads in a packed international calendar. 🏏
