USA’s T20 World Cup campaign hangs in the balance as they prepare to face Netherlands at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. After pushing India close in Mumbai, USA were outplayed by Pakistan in Colombo. A third straight defeat on Friday would end their hopes of reaching the Super Eight.
History offers little comfort. USA are yet to beat Netherlands in three previous men’s T20I meetings.
Injuries have compounded their challenge. Ali Khan is nursing a groin strain, while Jasdeep Singh has been ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury. His replacement, Ehsan Adil, conceded 39 runs in three overs against Pakistan. There are also concerns around Shubham Ranjane’s fitness. USA have shuffled their opening combinations too, with Saiteja Mukkamalla dropped after one failure despite strong form leading into the event.
Netherlands arrive with momentum. Bas de Leede’s allround display helped them ease past Namibia in Delhi, and their depth stands out. With Roelof van der Merwe listed at No. 9, they bat long and boast varied bowling options. Their familiarity with Chennai conditions, following a training camp at the Chennai Super Kings Academy, could prove valuable.
Van der Merwe, the only frontline left arm spinner in the squad, may relish facing a right hand heavy USA line up. Meanwhile Saurabh Netravalkar, who leaked 65 runs against India before bouncing back versus Pakistan, will be key with the new ball.
The Chepauk surface has been described as docile, with low average turn this tournament. This will be the first night game at the venue, bringing dew into play.
With elimination looming and rankings separating the sides, USA must produce their most complete performance yet.
