Trott Backs Naib’s No. 3 Role, Explains Decision to Omit Noor

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott expressed satisfaction with Gulbadin Naib’s role at No. 3, while firmly backing the team’s decision to leave out young spinner Noor Ahmad.

Naib’s promotion up the order has been one of Afghanistan’s notable tactical shifts, and Trott believes the experienced all-rounder brings balance and clarity to the batting line-up. “Gulbadin understands his role well,” Trott said. “At No. 3, he gives us stability, allows others to play with freedom, and can adapt depending on how the innings unfolds.”

Naib’s composure and ability to rotate strike have been key factors behind the coaching staff’s confidence, particularly in high-pressure tournament cricket where Afghanistan are keen to avoid collapses after aggressive starts.

Trott was also asked about the absence of Noor, one of Afghanistan’s most exciting left-arm spin prospects. While acknowledging Noor’s talent, Trott stressed that selection was driven by conditions and team balance rather than form alone. “Noor is very much part of our plans,” he explained. “But in certain conditions, we felt other combinations gave us a better chance.”

With Afghanistan boasting a wealth of spin options, competition for places has intensified, forcing difficult calls. Trott emphasised that managing workloads and match-ups is crucial across a long tournament.
