Thornton’s career-best haul overshadows Head’s early dismissal

Henry Thornton produced a career-best bowling performance before Travis Head fell cheaply as South Australia cricket team ended day one trailing New South Wales cricket team in their Sheffield Shield clash at Karen Rolton Oval.

South Australia dismissed New South Wales for 269 after Thornton claimed 5 for 71, his best figures in first-class cricket. However, the hosts suffered an early setback in their reply when Test opener Head was dismissed for just 5, leaving South Australia 20 for 1 at stumps, still trailing by 249 runs.

Head, returning to the Shield following Australia’s early exit from the T20 World Cup, faced just 12 balls before edging a delivery from Sean Abbott to second slip late in the day.

Earlier, Thornton spearheaded South Australia’s bowling effort after captain Nathan McSweeney chose to field first. The 29-year-old quick removed key batter Kurtis Patterson and also delivered a superb ball that jagged back to bowl Josh Philippe for 29.

New South Wales were in trouble at 126 for 6, but valuable lower-order contributions lifted them to a competitive total. Joel Davies top-scored with 47, while Abbott added useful runs alongside support from Charlie Stobo and Liam Hatcher.

Young opener Sam Konstas made a promising start with 37, but New South Wales slipped after reaching 62 for 1, losing three wickets for just ten runs.

The match carries significant importance in the race for the Shield final. With Victoria cricket team already securing top spot, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania remain locked in a tight battle for the second place and the remaining berth in the final.
