Thomas O’Connor Outshines Father Shayne with Record 13-Wicket Match Haul

Young left-arm seamer Thomas O’Connor delivered a stunning performance in the Plunket Shield, claiming a match haul of 13 wickets to lead Otago to a commanding victory over Auckland at Eden Park Outer Oval. In doing so, the 21-year-old surpassed the best first-class bowling figures recorded by his father, former New Zealand international Shayne O’Connor.

Thomas produced figures of 7 for 58 in the first innings and followed it up with an outstanding 6 for 27 in the second, wrapping up the match inside three days. His first-innings return is the best for Otago in the Plunket Shield since Neil Wagner’s 7 for 46 against Wellington in the 2011-12 season. His match figures also rank among Otago’s finest in the competition, the best since the 1989-90 season.

The performance carried extra significance as it eclipsed Shayne O’Connor’s career-best first-class match figures of 12 for 122 set in the 1998-99 season. Thomas’ bowling action and ability to generate sharp inswing have drawn comparisons with his father, a former Black Caps swing specialist.

Thomas’ skill was on full display throughout the match. One of his trademark inswing deliveries bowled Auckland No.3 Harrish Kannan in the first innings, while another trapped Dale Phillips lbw early in the second. He also demonstrated versatility by moving the ball away from left-handers, dismissing Lachlan Stackpole with a catch behind.

Despite the milestone, Thomas remained modest after the game, crediting his father’s guidance. “The most important advice he’s given me is about the mental side of the game – to enjoy it and have fun,” he said.

Ironically, Shayne was not present to watch the feat, as he was officiating as a match referee during the third ODI between New Zealand and Zimbabwe in Dunedin.

With only four first-class matches to his name, Thomas’ remarkable performance signals the emergence of a promising new pace talent in New Zealand cricket.
