The UAE take a perfect record into a Premier Cup semi-final against Hong Kong

Four teams are left in the tournament that decides the last places at the 2027 Asia Cup, and only one of them came through the group stage without losing

The ACC Men's Premier Cup reaches its semi-finals with the United Arab Emirates the only unbeaten side left, having won all four of their Group B matches.

They meet Hong Kong, who qualified second in Group A on the back of the result of the tournament so far. Nepal, the Group A winners, play Oman in the other semi-final.

The competition is the final stage of qualification for the 2027 Asia Cup, which is what every match here is actually about.

How the four got here

The UAE finished Group B with four wins from four and a net run rate close to two, comfortably the strongest record in the tournament. Their last group match was a 49-run win over Oman in which Aayan Afzal Khan took 5 for 34.

Nepal topped Group A on net run rate despite losing their final match, and Hong Kong took second place by winning it — a 15-run victory built on Babar Hayat's unbeaten 117.

Oman came second in Group B on four points, separated from Qatar and Kuwait by fractions of a run rate. All three finished level on points; only one went through.

The tie-break arithmetic is the sharpest feature of this tournament. Two groups of five, top two through, and a single heavy defeat anywhere in the group stage can undo three good results because run rate carries so much of the weight.

The hosts are gone

Malaysia, who staged the tournament, finished third in Group A on four points and are out.

They had done what a host needs to do, beating Bahrain by 126 runs a day before the group stage closed to keep their run rate healthy. It was not enough once Hong Kong beat Nepal and moved to six points.

Finishing a home tournament a single result short of the knockouts is a hard way to end a campaign that was competitive throughout.

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain finished the group stage on two points each, and Singapore ended theirs without a point from four matches.

What the semi-finals are worth

An Asia Cup place is the most valuable thing available to an associate side in this region. It means fixtures against full members, a broadcast audience, and the funding that follows both.

For sides outside the Test-playing group, those matches are otherwise close to unobtainable, which is why a 50-over tournament between ten associate teams carries the weight it does.

Nepal in particular arrive with a supporter base that most full members would envy, and a run to the final would be the third time in recent years they have pushed into a competition of this type.

Hong Kong have made a habit of these tournaments too, and their group campaign included a tie against Malaysia that they won in a Super Over — a point that turned out to matter a great deal by the final table.

The matchups

Hong Kong against the UAE is the tie with the clearer favourite on paper and the more recent form line against it. Hong Kong have just beaten the side that had won every match it played, and Babar Hayat is in the form of the tournament.

Nepal against Oman is harder to call. Nepal have the better record and the better run rate, but they lost their last match, and Oman scraped through a group in which three teams finished level.

Oman's own last outing was a defeat in which they were bowled out for 143 chasing 193, which is not the preparation a side wants going into a knockout.

Both semi-finals are played in Malaysia, in a tournament whose host is no longer in it.
