For most cricketers, bowling with both arms would be a novelty, if not an impossibility—but for Tharindu Rathnayake, it’s simply second nature. With 337 first-class and 122 List A wickets, he has accumulated an impressive domestic record, yet even he admits he’s not entirely sure which arm has brought him more success. “I’ve never looked at it properly,” he says, casually dismissing what would be an extraordinary feat for most. Having started his career primarily bowling left-arm spin, Rathnayake estimates that his current split is about 60% right-arm to 40% left-arm. On debut in Galle against Bangladesh, it was 15.5 overs of right-arm offspin before he even delivered a ball with his left—a tactical decision, he explains, due to conditions favouring deliveries that turn into right-handers on a batter-friendly surface. “Offspin gives me more options with fields,” he adds, citing the importance of match-ups in modern cricket. Rathnayake, unlike Kamindu Mendis—Sri Lanka's other ambidextrous spinner—is a specialist bowler and uses his rare ability with calculated intent. He revealed that pre-match planning involved identifying each batter’s strengths and weaknesses and tailoring his approach accordingly, including switching bowling arms based on who was at the crease. On a relatively flat Galle pitch that improved for batting throughout the day, Rathnayake’s two wickets—both left-handers dismissed by right-arm offspin—were a testament to the potential strategic advantage of ambidextrous bowling at the highest level. “There wasn’t much spin,” he observed, “but I expect it to stay good until day four,” suggesting further tactical adaptability could be key in the days to come.
