Beyers Swanepoel has received a crucial boost in his career after Cricket South Africa granted him a No Objection Certificate (NOC), clearing the way for him to feature in the 2026 County Championship for Worcestershire. However, the fast-bowling allrounder’s situation remains far from resolved, with disciplinary proceedings still hanging over him.
Swanepoel, who recently terminated his contract with Lions, is already training with Worcestershire and is expected to be available for their upcoming fixture against Kent starting April 24 at New Road. His absence had earlier forced Worcestershire to seek temporary cover, but his arrival now strengthens their squad significantly.
The controversy stems from Swanepoel’s abrupt departure during the One-Day Challenge final in South Africa. He left the field with seven overs remaining to catch a flight to the United Kingdom, without informing team management. Despite having completed his bowling spell and taking 3 for 44, his exit left the Lions a player short, and they ultimately lost a tightly contested match.
CSA has since charged Swanepoel with a Level 4 offence for bringing the game into disrepute. If found guilty, he could face a suspension ranging from multiple four-day matches to a series of one-day fixtures. The governing body has emphasized balancing players’ professional freedoms with maintaining discipline and the integrity of the sport.
While the NOC allows Swanepoel to resume his career in England, the outcome of the disciplinary process could still impact his availability in the coming weeks. For now, Worcestershire will hope his on-field contributions outweigh the off-field distractions as they prepare for a crucial stretch in the County Championship.
