Sussex Call £1.3m Loss a ‘Wake-Up Call’ After ECB Intervention and Board Resignations

Sussex County Cricket Club have described the past year as a “wake-up call” after revealing an operating loss of £1.331 million in their 2024-25 annual report, underscoring the scale of the club’s financial troubles.

The figures come just weeks after the England and Wales Cricket Board placed Sussex into special measures, docking the club points in all men’s county competitions. Four board members, including chair Jon Filby, have since resigned amid mounting pressure from former players and sponsors.

In a detailed response to members published alongside the accounts, Sussex admitted their budgeting and cost controls “have not been good enough”. The club acknowledged an over-reliance on anticipated income linked to the sale of stakes in The Hundred franchises, funds that did not fully materialise within the financial year. Although a one-off ECB payment of £413,000 softened the overall deficit, an expected interest payment of around £100,000 failed to arrive before year-end.

Sussex also conceded that commercial, retail and ticketing revenues — particularly from the T20 Blast — fell short of projections, while costs rose sharply. Increased national insurance contributions, higher minimum wage obligations, utility inflation and the added expense of operating a semi-professional women’s team all contributed to the widening gap.

The club admitted that forecasts were “overly optimistic” and corrective action was not taken early enough to prevent the deterioration. It stopped short of placing sole responsibility on former chief executive Peter Fitzboydon, instead pointing to insufficient scrutiny and governance oversight across the organisation.

Playing budgets are set to be reduced in the coming seasons, raising concerns over potential squad departures. An annual general meeting on March 24 will give members the opportunity to question senior figures as Sussex seek to restore financial stability and rebuild trust.
