Suryakumar to Captain Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 Opener in Hardik's Absence

Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in their opening match of IPL 2025, as regular captain Hardik Pandya will miss the game due to a one-match suspension from IPL 2024.

"We have been officially informed that Hardik has to sit out the first game," MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed during a press meet in Mumbai on Wednesday, adding that Suryakumar would step in as captain.

Hardik, reflecting on the suspension, admitted he was unaware of the full consequences of the slow over-rate penalty during MI's final league game last season.

"It was beyond my control. We bowled the last over a couple of minutes late, and at the time, I didn't know the consequences," Hardik said. "It’s unfortunate, but those are the rules. Whether this rule stays or changes next season is for the authorities to decide."

Suryakumar: The Natural Choice for Captaincy

With Suryakumar already leading India's T20I side in Hardik’s absence, his selection as MI's stand-in captain was a straightforward decision.

"Surya, of course, leads India in T20Is as well. When I’m not available, he is the ideal choice for this format," Hardik added.

MI's Early-Season Challenges

Mumbai Indians kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai on March 23. Along with Hardik, they will also be without Jasprit Bumrah, who is still recovering from a lower-back injury and is expected to miss multiple games.

Hardik’s suspension stems from MI's slow over-rate in their last league game of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Since it was his third such offence, he received a one-match ban along with a ₹30 lakh fine.

He will return for MI’s second game against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29. MI's first home match is on March 31 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), followed by matches against LSG in Lucknow on April 4 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at home on April 7.

After finishing last in IPL 2024 with just four wins in 14 matches, MI will be looking for a strong start under Suryakumar’s leadership before Hardik returns to reclaim the captaincy.
