Ireland are anxiously awaiting scan results after captain Paul Stirling injured his knee during their T20 World Cup defeat to Australia in Colombo.
Stirling landed awkwardly on his right knee after leaping high to complete a catch off Josh Inglis in the seventh over at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Though he initially remained on the field and later walked out to open the batting, it quickly became clear the injury was serious.
Attempting to push for a quick single in the Powerplay, Stirling visibly struggled and limped through the run. Moments later, he retired hurt and did not return. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 115 in pursuit of 183.
Batting coach Gary Wilson admitted the early signs are concerning.
“It does not look great,” Wilson said. “He went for a scan this evening, so we will have to wait for confirmation. He thought he was OK when he went out there to bat. He would not have gone out if he did not feel right. He was trying to maximise the Powerplay, but the knee seized up even more.”
Ireland have already suffered defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia in Colombo, leaving their Super Eight hopes hanging by a thread. They next face Oman at the SSC before travelling to Pallekele to take on Zimbabwe.
While qualification remains mathematically possible, Stirling’s availability could prove pivotal. As captain and senior batter, his absence would be a significant blow to a side seeking stability and belief in a must win stretch of matches.
