Sri Lanka chase down 430 to beat England despite Harry Brook's record 202

Sri Lanka chase down 430 to beat England despite Harry Brook's record 202

Sri Lanka chased down 430 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium to beat England by two wickets with one ball to spare, the second-highest successful run chase in one-day international history

Kusal Mendis won the toss and put England in, and for 50 overs that looked like the worst decision of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series. Harry Brook made 202 from 116 balls, the fastest double century in the history of the 50-over game, and England closed on 429 for 4.

Sri Lanka answered with 430 for 8 in 49.5 overs. Pavan Rathnayake made 130, Dasun Shanaka 97 from 50 balls, and Janith Liyanage struck the winning six off the penultimate delivery.

Only South Africa, who ran down Australia's 434 at the Wanderers in 2006, have chased more in a one-day international. It was Sri Lanka's first win of the tri-series and England's second defeat in two matches, leaving Pakistan on top of the table with two wins.

Brook's double century sets a record

Brook's innings came from 116 balls and contained 21 fours and 10 sixes, a strike rate of 174. He reached the double hundred from 114 balls, beating the 117 Shubman Gill took during his unbeaten 223 against West Indies at Guwahati.

He is also the first England batter to make a double century in one-day internationals, passing Ben Stokes' 182 against New Zealand in 2019.

Joe Root made 69 from 66 balls alongside him and Tom Banton a fifty at the top of the order. Will Jacks closed the innings out with an unbeaten 66 from 30 balls, and England were never pegged back after the halfway point.

Rathnayake and Fernando build the reply

Sri Lanka needed 8.6 an over from the first ball of the chase and never let the rate run away from them. Avishka Fernando made 97 from 83 balls and added 166 for the third wicket with Rathnayake.

Fernando fell three short of a century, but by then the chase had a shape. The required rate had been held close to the asking figure through the middle overs rather than allowed to climb into the teens.

Pavan Rathnayake batted through the heart of the innings for 130 from 106 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes, and was named player of the match. He was eventually caught by Banton off Sam Curran.

Shanaka turns the chase

The innings that moved the match was Dasun Shanaka's 97 from 50 balls, which included six fours and eight sixes.

He and Rathnayake put on 133 for the fourth wicket at better than a run a ball, turning a chase England still expected to control into one Sri Lanka were favourites to win.

Shanaka fell three short of a hundred, the second Sri Lankan to fall for 97 in the innings, with the target within reach.

Liyanage finishes it with a six

Janith Liyanage came in late and made 61 not out from 27 balls, with seven fours and three sixes, at a strike rate above 225.

He settled it by hitting Josh Tongue over long-off for six on the penultimate delivery. Tongue took 3-79, the best figures of an expensive night for England, while Curran conceded 103 from nine overs.

Where the tri-series stands

"Everyone believed we could do it," Mendis said afterwards, adding that he and coach Gary Kirsten had agreed to play the first couple of overs normally rather than go after the rate from the start.

Brook was left with a record and a defeat. "It doesn't mean anything now being on the losing side," the England captain said, before adding that Sri Lanka had played an absolute blinder.

England have now been beaten by Pakistan and by Sri Lanka and are yet to open their account, while Sri Lanka are up and running at the halfway point of the competition.

Scorecard: England 429 for 4 in 50 overs (Brook 202 not out, Root 69, Jacks 66 not out) lost to Sri Lanka 430 for 8 in 49.5 overs (Rathnayake 130, Fernando 97, Shanaka 97, Liyanage 61 not out; Tongue 3-79) by two wickets
