South Australia Still Soaking in 'Unreal' Sheffield Shield Glory

Celebrations continued into Monday as South Australia basked in the afterglow of their first Sheffield Shield title in 29 years. Crowds gathered at Rundle Mall in the heart of Adelaide to greet the champion team, as coach Ryan Harris and captain Nathan McSweeney admitted the magnitude of the achievement was still sinking in.

While the event was officially tied to Cricket Australia’s national schedule announcement for the upcoming season, CEO Todd Greenberg acknowledged the day was really all about SA’s historic triumph — one crowned by a now-iconic pitch invasion at Karen Rolton Oval.

“It Was Unreal”

“It was unreal,” Harris said, recalling the moment post-victory. “When we got upstairs and looked over the ground and saw the crowd, I just looked at the boys’ faces — I don’t think they fully realised how big this was.”

The coach shared that the players were still riding the high: “I talked to them yesterday. They’re all still buzzing. Everyone running on the field... just like 29 years ago.”

McSweeney, watching from the dressing room as Jason Sangha and Alex Carey steered the team home with a match-winning 202-run stand, sensed the excitement brewing among the crowd.

“I grew up watching scenes like that on TV — fans storming the field, players trying to get off — and suddenly we were part of it,” he said. “It’s a memory we’ll all cherish forever. It probably shouldn’t happen every game — it’s a bit dangerous — but this was a really special moment.”

A Second Chance, A Statement Win

McSweeney reflected on how many players in the squad had been given fresh opportunities by South Australia, including himself. Sangha, who averaged 78.22 after moving from New South Wales, even credited the state for “saving” his career following the final.

“A lot of us have been given a second chance here,” McSweeney said. “I was averaging 14 in Queensland when South Australia took a chance on me. Since then, I’ve grown as a player and as a person.”

He’s hopeful the title marks the beginning of a new era. “We’ve got a strong core group. If we stick together, we can build something lasting. Winning two trophies in one season — the Shield and the One-Day Cup — that’s the goal every year now.”

Harris Eyes Sustained Success

For Harris, who led the side in his first season as head coach, the achievement marks a perfect return to his home state. He plans to briefly reflect on the accomplishment during a holiday in Bali before turning his focus to the future.

“To win both titles — it’s never been done here before,” Harris said. “I moved back to South Australia to win trophies. I told the boys that when I came on board.”

Now, the challenge is to maintain momentum. “It’s my job to keep the hunger alive,” he added. “When the players return in June, we want them ready to go again — to fight hard, play well, and keep this run going.”

South Australia’s long-awaited Sheffield Shield success has not only thrilled fans but laid the foundation for what could be a golden era. And if this season is anything to go by, they’re just getting started.
