Sophie Devine to Retire from ODIs After World Cup, Continues T20 Career on Casual Basis

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has announced that she will retire from ODI cricket following the 50-over World Cup in India and Sri Lanka later this year, while remaining available for T20 Internationals under a casual playing agreement with New Zealand Cricket (NZC). The 35-year-old allrounder, who debuted in 2006 at just 17, has enjoyed a remarkable 19-year ODI career, becoming New Zealand's second-most capped women's ODI player behind Suzie Bates and ranking fourth on the country’s all-time ODI run-scorers list — a position she is likely to improve by tournament’s end. Devine also boasts eight ODI centuries and sits second on New Zealand’s women’s ODI wicket-takers list, with over 100 wickets, alongside Lea Tahuhu. While she steps back from full-time international cricket, Devine will continue contributing in T20Is as her overseas franchise commitments allow. Her decision comes as NZC prepares to announce its 17-player women's contract list, where she will no longer hold a central contract. Devine emphasized her full commitment to leading the team through the World Cup, expressing excitement about guiding the young group during this transitional period.
