Smith Confident SA20 Will Thrive Despite BBL’s Push to Be World’s No. 2 T20 League

Graeme Smith, commissioner of South Africa’s SA20 league, has dismissed suggestions that the competition could be under threat from the Big Bash League’s (BBL) ambitions to cement itself as the second-largest T20 tournament behind the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BBL, which recently outlined plans to attract bigger international names and strengthen its global footprint, has long been Australia’s premier T20 product. However, the rise of franchise cricket across the globe — with leagues in South Africa, the UAE, the Caribbean, and the United States — has intensified competition for players, sponsors, and audiences.

Smith, though, remains unfazed. “Every league has its own identity, its own market, and its own challenges,” he said during a recent media briefing. “We never set out to compete with the IPL or the BBL. Our focus has always been on building something unique for South African cricket, something sustainable that excites fans, develops local players, and attracts world-class talent.”

The SA20, launched in 2023, has already made significant strides in its short existence. Backed by IPL franchise owners, the league has lured high-profile international players while simultaneously giving South African youngsters a stage to perform in front of packed crowds and global audiences. Its blend of entertainment, competitive cricket, and a carnival-like atmosphere has drawn comparisons with the IPL — a deliberate move, according to Smith, to give the tournament international appeal.

In contrast, the BBL has been working to reinvigorate itself, following concerns that lengthy schedules and restrictions on overseas player participation had diluted its impact. Cricket Australia has responded with reforms, including shorter seasons and marquee player contracts, to ensure the league maintains its relevance in the crowded global calendar.

Smith, however, believes the cricketing ecosystem has room for multiple leagues to flourish. “This isn’t a zero-sum game,” he explained. “Players want opportunities, fans want quality cricket, and broadcasters want compelling products. The global calendar is evolving, and we all play a role in that. SA20 isn’t threatened by anyone else’s ambitions — we’re just focused on becoming the best version of ourselves.”

The former Proteas captain also stressed that SA20’s long-term value lies in its impact on South African cricket, from grassroots development to preparing players for international duty. “If we can inspire the next generation, keep our talent at home, and make South Africa a key destination on the T20 map, we’ve achieved our goal,” he added.

As the tug-of-war between global T20 leagues intensifies, Smith’s confidence suggests that the SA20 is here to stay, carving out its own niche rather than being overshadowed by the IPL juggernaut or the BBL’s resurgence.
