Shubman Gill Reclaims No. 1 Spot in ICC ODI Batting Rankings

July 29: India captain Shubman Gill has returned to the top of the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings, reclaiming the No. 1 position after an impressive series against England.

Gill amassed 188 runs across the three-match ODI series, while previous leader Daryl Mitchell missed New Zealand's final two ODIs against West Indies due to injury, allowing the Indian opener to move back to the summit for the third time in his career.

Scholtz enters ODI bowling top ten

Namibia left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz was among the biggest gainers in the latest rankings update.

His economical spells during the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 in Utrecht—returning figures of 1 for 21 against the Netherlands and 0 for 14 against Nepal from his full ten-over quotas—lifted him five places to seventh in the ODI bowling rankings.

Several other players also made progress following the recently concluded New Zealand-West Indies ODI series.

  • Will Young climbed three places to joint-38th.
  • Sherfane Rutherford rose 13 spots to 45th.
  • Tom Latham improved five places to 46th.

Pakistan-West Indies Test impacts rankings

The first Test between West Indies and Pakistan in Tarouba also produced notable movement in the ICC Test rankings.

Fast bowlers dominated the contest as all 40 wickets fell to pace.

Player of the Match Justin Greaves, who claimed seven wickets including a first-innings five-wicket haul, jumped 21 places to No. 48 among Test bowlers.

Fellow West Indies seamer Jayden Seales advanced five positions to No. 24 after taking five wickets in Pakistan's second innings.

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas, whose match figures of 8 for 85 included a five-for, re-entered the top 20, climbing nine places to 17th, his highest ranking since 2021.

Batters also make gains

Among Test batters:

  • Babar Azam moved up four places to 15th after his unbeaten 58.
  • Shan Masood climbed eight positions to 36th following his century.
  • Shai Hope rose from 51st to 39th after scoring 92 for West Indies.

Sooryavanshi's rapid rise continues

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his remarkable rise in international cricket after starring in India's 3-0 T20I series win over Zimbabwe.

The 15-year-old finished as Player of the Series, scoring 151 runs at a strike rate of 196.10, which propelled him 230 places to No. 48 in the ICC T20I batting rankings despite having played only six international matches.

India also saw further gains in the T20I rankings:

  • Tilak Varma climbed two spots to No. 6 among batters.
  • Shreyas Iyer improved seven places to 24th.
  • Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani rose ten spots to 26th in the bowling rankings.
  • India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi made one of the biggest jumps, moving up 31 places to No. 41.
