Shikha Pandey stars as Knight Riders open WCPL with 21-run win

Trinbago Knight Riders began their Women’s Caribbean Premier League campaign in winning fashion, defeating defending champions Barbados Tridents by 21 runs in Bridgetown.

After being put in to bat, Knight Riders made a strong start through Laura Harris and Yastika Bhatia, who added 67 runs for the opening wicket in just 5.4 overs. Harris led the charge with a quick 38 off 19 balls, while Yastika contributed 35 from 24 deliveries.

However, Barbados fought back with the ball. Qiana Joseph claimed 3 for 27, while Suzie Bates and Hayley Matthews picked up two wickets each to restrict Trinbago to 155. Madeline Penna's 27 off 21 balls provided valuable late runs.

The Tridents started their chase positively. Matthews and Joseph put together 40 for the opening wicket before Maddy Green and Kiran Navgire added 39 for the third. Navgire continued to keep the chase alive with another 22-run partnership with Naijanni Cumberbatch, taking Barbados to 107 for 4 in the 13th over.

But the Tridents' innings collapsed thereafter. Shikha Pandey spearheaded the Knight Riders' bowling attack, dismissing Matthews and Cumberbatch before wrapping up the innings with the wicket of Afy Fletcher.

Pandey finished with an impressive 3 for 17, earning the Player of the Match award as Barbados were bowled out for 134 in 18.4 overs.

Trinbago Knight Riders won by 21 runs, making a confident start to their WCPL title campaign.
