Saud Shakeel frustrated by Pakistan’s repeated batting failures at Edgbaston

Saud Shakeel has expressed his frustration with Pakistan’s recurring batting problems after the visitors were dismissed for just 133 on the opening day of the third Test against England at Edgbaston.

Pakistan struggled despite conditions becoming increasingly favourable for batting as the day progressed. Their top five all failed to reach double figures, while the lower-order partnership between Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali lasted the longest in the innings, surviving 46 balls.

Shakeel admitted that Pakistan’s batsmen were continuing to make the same mistakes, with several soft dismissals contributing to another disappointing collapse.“It’s depressing, we’re making the same mistake as a batting unit,” Shakeel said, acknowledging the frustration within the team.

The left-hander, however, rejected the idea that a lack of confidence was behind Pakistan’s struggles. He said players at this level needed to have the belief to perform, while admitting that poor form can be difficult to overcome when conditions are challenging.

Shakeel once again emerged as Pakistan’s most reliable batter, scoring 140 runs across his last two innings. He explained that he had adjusted his normally defensive approach to counter the situation, especially with wickets falling regularly around him.

The batter also pointed to the movement available to England’s bowlers, saying Pakistan had been surprised by how much assistance the conditions offered. He acknowledged that the team needed to improve its ability to survive difficult periods rather than repeatedly losing wickets in clusters.
