Saim Ayub’s maiden T20 century powers Kingsmen to victory

Saim Ayub produced a stunning century to guide the Jamaica Kingsmen to an 11-run victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre on Thursday.

The win lifted the Kingsmen to fourth place in the points table, while the Patriots remained at the bottom with just one victory from five matches.

Batting first after being asked to do so, the Kingsmen were in early trouble as Naseem Shah dismissed both openers cheaply. Wanindu Hasaranga then removed Kirk McKenzie after a 31-run partnership with Ayub, before Usman Khan was brilliantly caught by Hasaranga to leave the Kingsmen struggling at 63 for 4.

Ayub then changed the course of the innings. He launched Waqar Salamkheil for 21 runs in the 14th over, racing to his half-century with a six over deep mid-wicket. The Pakistan batter continued to attack and built a crucial 71-run partnership with Rovman Powell.

Hasaranga eventually broke the stand in the 17th over, but Ayub remained aggressive. He brought up his maiden T20 century with a six in the 19th over, only to fall from the next delivery. His 102-run knock nevertheless helped the Kingsmen finish strongly at 182 for 7, with 42 runs coming from the final three overs.

The Patriots’ chase got off to a poor start after a rain delay. They lost three wickets during the Powerplay while managing only 42 runs, and their problems continued against disciplined Kingsmen bowling.

At 64 for 4 after 11 overs, the Patriots needed something special. Andre Fletcher provided hope with a burst of boundaries and reached his half-century in the 14th over. However, he was dismissed two overs later after returning a catch to Ayub.

With 64 runs required from the final three overs, Jason Holder and Dasun Shanaka briefly revived the chase with a 24-run over. Hunain Shah then delivered a superb 19th over, dismissing Holder and putting the Kingsmen firmly back in control.

Shanaka kept the Patriots alive with two sixes at the start of the final over, but Odean Smith held his nerve. The Patriots could manage only one more boundary and finished on 171 for 6, falling 11 runs short.
