Sai Sudharsan was helped from the field in Jaipur on the second day of Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy match against Rajasthan after a blow to the knee, then returned to open the innings with the India A tour of New Zealand a fortnight away
The India batter was fielding at cover when Karan Lamba drove at a delivery during the Rajasthan first innings. Sudharsan threw himself to his right to cut the ball off, stopped it, and stayed down holding the knee.
He could not walk off unaided. A member of the Tamil Nadu support staff helped him to the boundary, and he sat in the dugout with an ice pack on the joint while the innings went on without him.
Sources in the Tamil Nadu camp, quoted in Indian reports on Monday, said the injury was not thought to be serious, and the player's own response bore that out: he took throwdowns at the lunch interval and walked out to open his side's reply a few hours later.
The incident came with Rajasthan building the only innings of the match so far. They had won the toss, chosen to bat, and were eventually bowled out for 363 in 115.3 overs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Sudharsan was off the field for part of that innings. No scan result has been reported, and the full extent of the knock is still subject to a medical assessment.
Tamil Nadu's reply began with Sudharsan at the top alongside Narayan Jagadeesan, a decision that answered the immediate fitness question more plainly than any bulletin could.
It did not last. He fell for 3, one of three wickets to go down as Tamil Nadu reached 148 for 3 from 43 overs, still 215 runs behind on first innings.
The runs matter less than the fact of him walking out at all. A batter who cannot bear weight on a knee does not open a first-class innings on the same day.
The concern is cumulative rather than sudden. Sudharsan missed close to a month earlier in 2026 with a rib injury picked up during the Vijay Hazare Trophy in January.
A stress injury to his right big toe followed, and it cost him a place in India's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. This match was part of his way back into red-ball cricket.
That sequence is why a knee that needed help off the field drew the reaction it did, rather than passing as an ordinary fielding knock.
Sudharsan is in the India A squad for three multi-day matches against New Zealand A, a side captained by Dhruv Jurel.
The first is at Lincoln from 24 to 27 October, the second at Christchurch from 31 October to 3 November, and the third back at Lincoln from 7 to 10 November.
Those matches sit directly in front of India's own red-ball assignment in New Zealand, which makes them an audition as much as a tour, and makes any fitness doubt in the batting group worth watching.
The BCCI has issued no statement on the injury and has named no replacement, which is consistent with a knock being monitored rather than treated.
The board's senior touring party is already set for the white-ball leg, with the first of five T20Is at Christchurch on 22 October. On the longer formats it said only that the squad for the ODIs and Test series would be announced later.
Tamil Nadu resume on day three with the first innings still to be settled, and with their most watched batter expected to field.
