Sai Kishore takes ten wickets and a hat-trick as Tamil Nadu beat Uttarakhand in Chennai
Tamil Nadu's captain followed four first-innings wickets with 6 for 34 and a hat-trick on the third day as Uttarakhand lost by an innings and 66 runs at Chepauk
Tamil Nadu beat Uttarakhand by an innings and 66 runs in their Elite Group D match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, finishing the contest inside three days and less than an hour after lunch.
The win belonged to Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore. The Tamil Nadu captain took 4-40 in the first innings and 6-34 from 16 overs in the second, a match return of 10 for 74, and removed three Uttarakhand batters in three balls in the 43rd over of the second innings.
Tamil Nadu's one substantial innings came from Pradosh Ranjan Paul, whose 136 from 279 balls turned a modest position into a lead of 179.
Uttarakhand undone on the opening day
Sai Kishore put Uttarakhand in and they were bowled out for 134 in 56.2 overs. Seamer Gurjapneet Singh removed the top three on his way to 4-34, and Sai Kishore took four of the remaining wickets.
Only two batters passed 20. Avneesh Sudha made 54 from 103 balls before he was stumped by Narayan Jagadeesan off Sai Kishore, and Mayank Mishra occupied the crease for 114 balls in making 33.
Four of the last six in the order failed to score. Uttarakhand's last seven batters mustered 35 runs between them.
Paul and Indrajith build the lead
Tamil Nadu lost Vimal Khumar for a four-ball duck, and Jagadeesan went for 37, before a long stand between Paul and Baba Indrajith settled the innings. Indrajith made 77 from 217 balls.
Paul batted for close to six hours for the only century of the match before he was trapped lbw by Mayank Mishra.
Mishra, who sent down 37 overs, finished with 5-118, and Sudha took 4-34 with his spin. Tamil Nadu were all out for 313 in 109 overs.
Three in three in the 43rd over
Uttarakhand were still batting with some purpose in their second innings when Sai Kishore bowled Lakshya Raichandani for 19.
The next two deliveries brought catches in close. Saurabh Rawat was taken by Indrajith and Aditya Rawat by Jagadeesan, both for nought and both first ball, completing the hat-trick.
Sai Kishore, a left-arm spinner who has played three T20 internationals for India, closed the innings with figures of 16-5-34-6.
A collapse of five for 10
Uttarakhand lost their last five wickets for 10 runs and were dismissed for 113 in 45.4 overs, 66 short of making Tamil Nadu bat again.
Left-arm spinner S Ajith Ram took 4-33 from 15.4 overs at the other end, so the two spinners shared all ten wickets of the innings between them.
Dega Nischal's 25 was the highest score of the innings, and the last four batters all finished without a run.
A heavy reverse for last season's semi-finalists
Uttarakhand reached the semi-finals of the previous Ranji Trophy season, so an innings defeat in three days is a setback early in this campaign.
For Tamil Nadu, the match turned on spin at both ends on a home surface, with Sai Kishore and Ajith Ram taking 14 of the 19 Uttarakhand wickets that fell to bowlers.
Scorecard: Uttarakhand 134 (Avneesh Sudha 54; Gurjapneet Singh 4-34, Sai Kishore 4-40) and 113 (Sai Kishore 6-34, Ajith Ram 4-33) lost to Tamil Nadu 313 (Pradosh Ranjan Paul 136, Baba Indrajith 77; Mayank Mishra 5-118, Avneesh Sudha 4-34) by an innings and 66 runs
