Ryan ten Doeschate Returns to Knight Riders as Head of Cricket Strategy

July 29: The Knight Riders Group has appointed former Netherlands captain Ryan ten Doeschate as its new Head of Cricket Strategy, entrusting him with overseeing the long-term cricketing direction across all four of its global franchises.
In his new long-term role, ten Doeschate will be responsible for shaping scouting, player recruitment, squad planning, talent development and performance evaluation for Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL), Trinbago Knight Riders (CPL), Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ILT20) and Los Angeles Knight Riders (MLC).
His first assignment will be with Trinbago Knight Riders during the 2026 Caribbean Premier League, which begins on August 7.
Returns after India coaching stint
The appointment comes shortly after ten Doeschate stepped down as assistant coach of the Indian men's team, a position he held for two years under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
He had joined India's coaching staff following Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL triumph in 2024, where he previously served as part of the franchise's coaching group.
Looking ahead
Expressing his excitement about returning to the Knight Riders setup, ten Doeschate said he is eager to work across the group's global network."I'm excited to be back with the Knight Riders in this role. It's a unique opportunity to work closely with the coaching and analytics teams across all our franchises, strengthen scouting and player development systems, and build a long-term cricket strategy."
Long association with Knight Riders
The 46-year-old has enjoyed a long relationship with the Knight Riders organisation.
He first represented Kolkata Knight Riders as a player during the 2011 IPL season and was a member of the championship-winning squads in 2012 and 2014.
Later, he returned as a coach between 2022 and 2024, helping KKR secure their third IPL title alongside mentor Gautam Gambhir, head coach Chandrakant Pandit and captain Shreyas Iyer.
Expanded responsibilities
Apart from directing the franchise's cricket strategy, ten Doeschate will also serve as an assistant coach for Trinbago Knight Riders, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Los Angeles Knight Riders.
Knight Riders Group CEO Venky Mysore welcomed the appointment, describing ten Doeschate as an ideal fit for the role."Ryan understands the Knight Riders philosophy better than most. His experience across international and franchise cricket makes him the perfect person to guide our cricket strategy and support the continued growth of all our teams."
Reunites with familiar faces
During the IPL, ten Doeschate will once again work alongside Abhishek Nayar, now Kolkata Knight Riders' head coach. The pair previously collaborated both with KKR and the Indian national team.
The wider coaching setup also includes Shane Watson, while Dwayne Bravo continues as head coach of Los Angeles Knight Riders.
Knight Riders' global journey
The Knight Riders Group has experienced mixed success across its four franchises in recent years.
- Trinbago Knight Riders are five-time CPL champions and the defending title holders.
- Los Angeles Knight Riders lifted their maiden Major League Cricket title earlier this month.
- Abu Dhabi Knight Riders are still searching for their first ILT20 final appearance.
- Kolkata Knight Riders, despite winning three IPL trophies, have endured difficult recent campaigns, finishing eighth and seventh in the last two seasons.
With ten Doeschate now overseeing the group's long-term cricket operations, the Knight Riders will be aiming to build a more unified strategy across all of their global teams while strengthening player identification and development for the future.
