Rohit, Suryakumar half-centuries power MI to NRR-boosting victory

Mumbai Indians (MI) made it three wins in a row in IPL 2025, comfortably defeating a lacklustre Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and boosting their net run rate in the process. CSK’s innings was defined by a cautious, almost hesitant approach—failing to hit a boundary in the first three overs and enduring a 27-ball stretch in the middle without even attempting one. Their final blow came in the 17th and 18th overs, where Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, MI’s standout bowlers, didn’t concede a single boundary.

Alongside the run-rate gain that brought MI to eight points from eight matches, they also saw Rohit Sharma return to form with his first half-century of the season—his previous best being just 26. MI recorded their first 50-plus opening partnership of the season, with Suryakumar Yadav overcoming CSK’s spin threat through an array of inventive sweeps.

Cautious CSK Falter on Batting-Friendly Surface

Played on the same Wankhede pitch that produced 430 runs in a recent MI-RCB clash, this match called for an aggressive batting mindset. But CSK, possibly wary of a collapse, chose a defensive path. Their openers played it safe for too long—managing just 16 runs in the first three overs. Rachin Ravindra’s mistimed loft resulted in an early wicket, but 17-year-old debutant Ayush Mhatre brought some spark with a 15-ball 32, reminiscent of a young Dwayne Bravo.

Despite that spark, MI stayed patient. Deepak Chahar bowled a rare fourth consecutive over and got Mhatre with a well-disguised legcutter. CSK ended the powerplay with just 48.

Middle-Order Resistance, but No Fireworks

Mitchell Santner struck in the eighth over to remove Shaik Rasheed with a beautifully flighted delivery, but his success led to his withdrawal from the attack once Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube came together. The CSK duo played risk-free cricket, not attempting a single boundary between the 8th and 12th overs.

They did, however, pick up the pace in the latter half, targeting Trent Boult and Ashwani Kumar for 85 runs across six overs. Dube, in particular, accelerated to a 30-ball fifty, while Jadeja played anchor. Bumrah dismissed Dube with a slower ball, allowing MI to reintroduce Santner in the 18th. He closed out his spell economically, and Jadeja’s late surge off Boult gave CSK a modest total.

Rohit Sets the Tone in the Chase

MI’s batting, long reliant on the middle order, finally got the solid start they were craving. Rohit Sharma blazed to 32 off 18 balls in the powerplay, punishing early pace bowling errors. Only R Ashwin kept him quiet for a while—until Rohit broke free with a slog-swept six in the eighth over.

Suryakumar Sweeps MI to Victory

Rohit wasn’t alone in conquering old foes. Suryakumar Yadav, who had struggled historically against Jadeja, turned the tide with a flurry of sweeps. After walking in following the dismissal of Ryan Rickelton, Surya targeted Jadeja in the ninth over—hitting a boundary over extra cover and a six via sweep, his first ever against the left-arm spinner.

That was just the beginning. Surya’s sweep shot masterclass yielded 35 runs off nine sweeps, including three sixes and four fours. He soon outpaced Rohit and guided MI to victory with 4.2 overs remaining, sealing a crucial net run rate boost.
