Robinson strikes twice in the first over as Pakistan end day two 268 behind at Edgbaston

Ollie Robinson struck twice in the first over of Pakistan's second innings after making a half-century of his own, leaving the tourists 268 behind at stumps on day two of the third Test at Edgbaston

England were bowled out for 453 in 89 overs, a first-innings lead of 320 assembled from five half-centuries after Pakistan, put in to bat on the opening day, had been dismissed for 133 in 33.5 overs.

Pakistan then lost both openers before a run was scored. Ollie Robinson had Saim Ayub caught off the first ball of the innings, completing a pair, and removed Abdullah Shafique three deliveries later to leave the tourists nought for two.

Rain ended play with Pakistan 52 for 2 from 12.4 overs, still 268 runs short of making England bat again. England lead the series 2-0 and need eight wickets to complete a 3-0 sweep.

Five fifties and no hundred

England resumed on 156 for four, 23 runs ahead, and lost Harry Brook as the first wicket of the morning. He added 23 to his overnight score before he was run out for 75, short of an 11th Test century.

Dan Lawrence made 65 before chopping on, and Jamie Smith was caught and bowled by Razaullah for 69. Emilio Gay's 60 had come on day one.

Robinson's 50 was his second half-century in Test cricket, and Jofra Archer struck an unbeaten 32 as the last pair pushed the total past 450. Five England batters passed fifty in the innings and none reached three figures.

Lawrence left to rue another start

Lawrence, who made 51 at Headingley and 54 at Lord's earlier in this series, is still without an international hundred. "I'm obviously gutted that I didn't kick on and make a really big score, but I was pretty happy with how I did overall," he told Sky Sports.

"I felt like I was playing really nicely and it was a really good surface to bat on against the tiring attack," Lawrence said.

A long day on debut for Razaullah

Razaullah, one of the uncapped players flown in when Pakistan reshaped their squad mid-tour, finished with 4-148 on debut, his fourth wicket the caught-and-bowled that ended Smith's innings.

Smith later left the field with an injured finger and Jordan Cox kept wicket in his place.

Two wickets in four balls

Robinson's opening burst brought him 2-10 from six overs, Shafique edging to Joe Root at slip. Root's catch was his 220th as an outfielder in Tests.

The rest of the evening belonged to Pakistan's middle order. Shan Masood and Azan Awais put on an unbroken 52, Masood unbeaten on 21 and Awais on 29 when the rain arrived.

Masood was put down on 13 by Ben Duckett off Gus Atkinson, the third catch Duckett has shelled in this match.

A tour that has already unravelled

Pakistan lost the first Test by an innings and 103 runs and the second by 194, and the touring party was broken up between the second and third Tests. Seven players were sent home, head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed alongside bowling coach Umar Gul, and Mike Hesson took charge of the Test side.

The first innings here followed the pattern of the tour. Josh Tongue took 4-42, Robinson 3-15 and Archer 3-25 as Pakistan were dismissed inside 34 overs, with Saud Shakeel's 43 the only innings of substance.

Robinson now has 21 wickets at 6.66 in this series, and his over on Thursday evening briefly raised the prospect of a finish inside two days.
