Rehan Ahmed Included in England Lions Squad for West Indies White-Ball Tour
England legspinner Rehan Ahmed has been named in the England Lions squads for their upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies after missing out on selection for the senior team's tours of Pakistan and Australia. The 22-year-old will get another opportunity to strengthen his case for an England recall during a series featuring three T20 matches and five one-day games in St Kitts and Nevis next month.
Ahmed struggled to make a strong impression in two ODIs against Sri Lanka last month. Despite recently signing a new central contract, he was left out of Brendon McCullum's senior white-ball squads. His selection for both the Lions' T20 and 50-over teams provides an opportunity to regain form and demonstrate his readiness for international cricket.
The tour will mark Jonathan Trott's first assignment as England Lions head coach, following Andrew Flintoff's resignation. Trott has made it clear that the Lions programme will play an important role in preparing players for senior international cricket and helping them push for national selection across formats. He wants players to use the opportunity to perform consistently while contributing to the team's success.
The squads include nine players who recently signed England contracts for the 2026–27 season. Ahmed, Dan Lawrence and Sam Cook have full central contracts, while Mason Crane, James Coles, Thomas Rew, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack and Liam Patterson-White have development contracts. England managing director Rob Key has also stressed the importance of Lions cricket, particularly in the 50-over format, as it gives players valuable opportunities to develop in a format they may not regularly play.
Thomas Rew will captain the T20 side after guiding England Under-19s to the World Cup final in Zimbabwe earlier this year. His older brother, James Rew, has been selected for both squads, alongside Ben Mayes, another member of the Under-19 World Cup team. Worcestershire seamer Adam Finch has also earned his first Lions call-up following impressive performances in the Vitality Blast.
Some players will leave the tour early to join England's T20I series in Australia. James Coles, Eddie Jack and Thomas Rew are scheduled to depart after the third one-day match. Meanwhile, Asa Tribe's availability for the opening T20 fixtures could be affected by his involvement with Jersey's squad in Kenya for Challenge League matches linked to qualification for the 2027 50-over World Cup.
The England Lions will face West Indies A in three T20 matches on November 1, 3 and 4, followed by five one-day games on November 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16. The tour forms part of England's wider development programme, with further Lions tours to South Africa and Sri Lanka planned over the winter. The matches will also offer players an opportunity to strengthen their claims for selection ahead of next year's World Cup qualifiers.
