RCB Remains Relaxed About Potential Workload Management in IPL 2025

As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) prepare for their first home game of the IPL 2025 season, the team management is already looking ahead to the challenges that lie ahead. Following two away fixtures, RCB now enters a crucial phase, alternating between home and away matches for the next ten games. The rigorous schedule, along with extensive travel, has raised concerns regarding player workload management, an issue that team director Mo Bobat addressed during a press conference on April 1 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Navigating a Packed Schedule

Bobat acknowledged the intensity of RCB's schedule, particularly in the middle phase of the tournament. "I think you just deal with the schedule that you get given. We definitely try to focus in those first couple of games on making a statement start. Going to two big teams with good and proud home records is a good challenge, so we use that as something to motivate the group. Similarly, we want to come back here and put on a show in front of our own fans," he said.

The biggest challenge for RCB lies in the middle phase of the tournament. "From after this game onwards, we play something like seven games in 22 days with seven travel days. That's a very hectic schedule. So I'm more interested in how we keep the boys fresh through that period and keep playing the way we want to play," Bobat added.

Managing Player Workload

RCB's pace attack includes Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both of whom have had injury concerns in the past. While Hazlewood has successfully returned to competitive cricket post-rehabilitation, Bhuvneshwar was rested from the first game due to a minor niggle.

"Bhuvi had a slightly slower start because of a minor niggle, and we didn't want to put him at risk. He probably could have played the first game if we really wanted him to, but we didn't want to take unnecessary chances. Josh came off an injury with Cricket Australia, and they managed that conservatively before handing him over to us, where we completed the rehab process. So both are in a good place now," Bobat explained.

Bobat emphasized that while player workload management is always a consideration, every game remains crucial. "Right now, every game is important, so we're not thinking too far ahead. We'll take it on a day-by-day, week-by-week basis. Our medical team has been brilliant, and we have had fewer soft-tissue injuries compared to other teams. We will keep focusing on keeping our key players on the park. If rest is needed, we're relaxed about that because we have a strong squad," he said.

Strength in Depth

RCB is confident in its bowling depth, should the need arise for rotation. "Two bowlers like Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood bring extreme class and international pedigree. They know their strengths well, and the opposition does too. They're not easy bowlers to play against. It's also worth mentioning Yash Dayal. As a three-man pace unit, these three offer high variety and skill, making them well suited for the challenges at Chinnaswamy," Bobat remarked.

Additionally, the team has backup options in Rasikh Salam and Nuwan Thushara. "Rasikh is a very skillful bowler, particularly in these conditions. We also have points of difference with players like Nuwan. So we're really happy with our bowling unit overall," he concluded.

As RCB gears up for the critical middle phase of IPL 2025, the team remains confident in its squad depth and strategic approach to workload management, ensuring that their key players stay fresh and perform at their peak.
