RCB and SRH Skippers Fined for Slow Over-Rate in IPL 2025 Clash

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Pat Cummins have both been penalised for their teams’ slow over-rates during Friday’s IPL 2025 clash in Lucknow. Patidar, whose team committed its second such offence this season — the first being on April 7 — was fined INR 24 lakh under the IPL’s code of conduct. The rest of the playing XII were each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was the lesser amount.

SRH captain Pat Cummins, whose team breached the over-rate regulation for the first time this season, was fined INR 12 lakh. Though Jitesh Sharma acted as RCB’s stand-in captain for the match with Patidar returning from injury as a batter-only, the official penalty still applied to Patidar, the designated team leader. This follows precedent, such as Rajasthan Royals’ Sanju Samson being fined for a second team offence even though Riyan Parag captained the side during their first.

Under updated IPL regulations introduced for the 2025 season, repeat over-rate offences now incur financial penalties but no longer lead to captain suspensions — a change from previous editions. Notably, Mumbai Indians' Hardik Pandya missed his team's season opener due to a carryover suspension from IPL 2024, before the rule was amended.

While this latest penalty does not affect team lineups for now, a third slow over-rate offence would lead to steeper fines for RCB and its leadership.
