Rajasthan Royals Sign Teen Sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius as Injury Replacement for Nitish Rana

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have signed Lhuan-dre Pretorius, a rising South African star, as a replacement for Nitish Rana, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to injury. Pretorius, just 19 years old, joins the franchise for INR 30 lakh, bringing explosive batting and wicketkeeping skills to the squad.

A powerful left-handed opener and agile wicketkeeper, Pretorius has yet to make his international debut but is already making waves in franchise cricket. He finished as the leading run-scorer in SA20 2025, amassing 397 runs in 12 matches at a blistering strike rate of 166.80. His standout innings was a 51-ball 97 for Paarl Royals against Sunrisers Eastern Cape—an explosive knock that cemented his reputation as one of the brightest young prospects in South Africa. Following his success in SA20, he was snapped up by Hampshire for his debut season in England's Vitality Blast.

Pretorius also impressed at the junior level, ending as South Africa’s top run-scorer in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, further highlighting his consistency across formats and conditions.

Nitish Rana, whom Pretorius replaces, had a couple of valuable contributions for RR this season. His 36-ball 81 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati and a brisk 51 off 28 balls against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Delhi were among the rare batting highlights in a forgettable campaign for the Royals.

Rajasthan Royals have already been eliminated from playoff contention, along with CSK and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), having managed only three wins in 12 matches. They currently sit ninth on the points table in the ten-team competition. Their final two matches are against CSK in Chennai on May 12 and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Jaipur on May 16, where they are likely to test out Pretorius and other young players as part of early rebuilding for IPL 2026.
