Rahul impressed by Padikkal's tone-setting ton, Suthar's subtle variations

India vice-captain KL Rahul has praised young teammates Devdutt Padikkal and Manav Suthar after their standout performances in India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle.

Padikkal was named Player of the Match after scoring a commanding 167 in the first innings and following it with a fluent 44 in the second. Playing only his third Test, the Karnataka batter’s aggressive approach and ability to build partnerships helped India post a strong first-innings total.

Rahul described Padikkal’s century as the defining moment of the Test, particularly given the heat and demanding conditions in Galle. He also expressed his happiness at seeing his Karnataka teammate score his maiden Test hundred.

Suthar, meanwhile, produced an equally impressive performance in only his second Test. The left-arm spinner claimed 10 wickets for 131 runs, taking four wickets in the first innings and six in the second.

Rahul highlighted Suthar’s ability to make subtle adjustments while maintaining the same bowling action and arm speed. His variations in pace, angles and use of drift made him a constant threat throughout the match.

The India vice-captain also pointed to Suthar’s consistency and accuracy as major strengths, noting that his bowling line allows him to challenge batters in multiple ways, including lbw, bowled and catches behind the wicket.

Rahul credited India’s first-class and India A structure for helping emerging players make the transition to international cricket. He said regular exposure to overseas conditions through India A tours gives youngsters valuable experience before they receive their Test caps.

Players such as Padikkal and Suthar have benefited from tours to countries including Australia, Sri Lanka and England, allowing them to understand different conditions and prepare for the demands of Test cricket.

Rahul believes this structured pathway from domestic cricket to India A and then the national team has played an important role in helping India’s younger players arrive at Test level better prepared and more confident.
