R Ashwin Questions India’s Handling of Kuldeep Yadav Ahead of New Zealand T20I Series

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised concerns about the Indian team management’s handling of Kuldeep Yadav, suggesting that the left-arm wrist-spinner could once again miss out on selection for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. Ashwin believes Kuldeep’s contributions over the years deserve greater consideration and that his recent struggles should not overshadow his overall record.

Kuldeep has found opportunities in India’s white-ball setup increasingly difficult to secure, particularly when the team prioritises batting depth and additional pace options. His uncertain position has prompted questions about whether the management is making the most of one of India’s specialist spin-bowling options.

The spinner’s recent omission from the playing XI against the West Indies has further intensified the debate, with Ashwin expressing disappointment over how the situation has unfolded.

Ashwin Raises Concerns Over Kuldeep’s Selection

Ashwin believes Kuldeep’s established record as an international wicket-taker should carry significant weight when selectors and team management decide the playing combination. In his assessment, holding a bowler solely responsible for an expensive performance can be unfair when match conditions and team strategy also influence the outcome.

The former India spinner also suggested that Kuldeep has not consistently received the backing that his performances warrant. He expects India could favour Varun Chakravarthy over Kuldeep in the New Zealand T20Is, depending on the availability and fitness of other players.

Hardik Pandya’s availability and Chakravarthy’s recovery from a side strain could influence the final combination. If India continue to prioritise batting resources and flexibility, Kuldeep may once again find himself outside the starting XI.

Ashwin’s comments highlight a broader selection dilemma for India: whether to strengthen the batting lineup with additional all-round options or include specialist bowlers who can provide a greater threat in particular conditions.

Kuldeep Yadav’s West Indies T20I Campaign

Kuldeep featured in only two matches during India’s recent T20I series against the West Indies before losing his place in the playing XI. He returned figures of 2/33 in Lucknow but conceded 53 runs while taking one wicket in Ranchi.

The expensive second outing appears to have affected his immediate prospects, as India subsequently opted for a different bowling combination. The team’s preference for an additional fast bowler meant Kuldeep remained on the sidelines for the remaining matches.

His omission has attracted attention because specialist spinners can play an important role on surfaces that offer grip and turn. However, selection decisions in T20 cricket also depend on match-ups, the balance of the batting order, bowling flexibility and the opposition's strengths.

For Kuldeep, the challenge will be to make the most of his opportunities whenever they arise. At the same time, the management must decide how best to utilise his wicket-taking ability within India's overall tactical plans.

India’s Preference for All-Rounders Raises Questions

Kuldeep’s selection challenges are not limited to T20 internationals. Despite making his Test debut in 2017, he has received relatively few opportunities in the longest format, with his appearances remaining limited compared with those of several other established international players.

His ODI record, which includes more than 200 wickets, demonstrates his ability to deliver results at the highest level. Nevertheless, competition for places and the preference for players who contribute with both bat and ball have affected the opportunities available to specialist bowlers.

All-rounders provide teams with greater flexibility, allowing captains to balance their batting and bowling resources. However, relying heavily on this approach can sometimes come at the expense of including a specialist bowler whose primary strength is taking wickets.

Kuldeep’s situation therefore reflects a wider selection challenge for India across formats. The management must balance the benefits of additional batting depth against the potential impact of a specialist spinner who can change a match by breaking partnerships.

New Zealand T20Is Could Be Crucial for Kuldeep

The upcoming T20I series against New Zealand could provide another indication of where Kuldeep stands in India's plans. His selection prospects may depend on the fitness of competing players, the conditions expected during the series and the combination the team chooses to field.

If India opt for a batting-heavy lineup, Kuldeep could face another spell on the bench. Alternatively, conditions favouring spin or a change in tactical priorities could improve his chances of returning to the side.

For the left-arm wrist-spinner, consistent performances and effective execution will remain important as he looks to strengthen his case for selection. For the team management, the key decision will be whether his wicket-taking potential outweighs the advantages offered by alternative combinations.

Ashwin’s assessment has brought renewed attention to Kuldeep’s role in Indian cricket. The final selection for the New Zealand series will reveal whether India intend to give the specialist spinner another opportunity or continue with their existing approach to team balance.
