R Ashwin Cleared of Ball-Tampering Allegations by TNPL After Madurai Panthers' Complaint

Former India offspinner R Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering charges by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) following accusations from the Siechem Madurai Panthers. The allegations, aimed at Ashwin’s team, Dindigul Dragons, claimed that they had used chemically treated towels to tamper with the ball during their match in Salem on June 14, which Madurai lost convincingly. In their formal complaint, Madurai’s coach Shijit Chandran stated that the ball had deteriorated unusually fast, adversely affecting their batting performance, and accused Dindigul of using roughening agents on towels to alter the ball’s condition — actions which, if proven, would amount to serious breaches of the game's spirit and laws. However, after a comprehensive review, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan announced that no evidence of tampering had been found, clarifying that the towels in question were standard TNCA-issued items equally accessible to both teams. He added that the match officials, including umpires and referees, had closely monitored the ball throughout the game and had raised no concerns during play. Kannan also noted procedural lapses in how Madurai filed their complaint, as it was submitted after the mandatory 24-hour period and not through the correct channels. Nevertheless, in the interest of fairness, the TNPL reviewed the complaint but ultimately deemed it speculative and lacking in verifiable proof. Madurai now has until June 17 to provide concrete evidence, failing which they could face sanctions for procedural violations. Meanwhile, Ashwin’s Dindigul Dragons continue their strong TNPL 2025 campaign, having comfortably chased 151 in under 13 overs to secure their second win of the season and defend their title as reigning champions.
