Priyansh Arya is bowled for 199 as Ayush Badoni's double hundred carries Delhi past 500
Priyansh Arya was bowled one run short of a maiden double hundred at Palam before his captain Ayush Badoni turned an overnight century into a double on the second morning
Delhi moved to 527 for 4 after 115 overs of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match against Gujarat, having won the toss and chosen to bat at the Palam B Stadium.
Arya, in only his third first-class match, made 199 from 221 balls at the top of the order before Manan Hingrajia bowled him in the 77th over.
Badoni, unbeaten on 115 at the close of the opening day, batted through the second morning to 204 not out, with Sumit Mathur 49 not out alongside him.
One run short at Palam
Arya had been within sight of a first double hundred in first-class cricket for the better part of an hour when Hingrajia, Gujarat's left-arm spinner, got one through him.
The dismissal put him in unwanted company. He is the first Indian batter since KL Rahul in 2016 to be out on 199 in red-ball cricket, Rahul having fallen on that score against England in Chennai.
By Wisden's count he is the 16th Indian dismissed on 199 in a first-class innings, a list that also carries Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin.
A maiden hundred built at pace
The innings was Arya's first century in first-class cricket, and it came quickly. He reached three figures from 126 balls, then added 99 from his next 95.
His strike rate for the innings was 90.04, a tempo closer to the white-ball cricket that made his name than to a four-day opening slot.
Arya joined Punjab Kings in 2025 and scored a 39-ball hundred against Chennai Super Kings that April, one of the fastest centuries by an Indian in the IPL. He has since played for India A, and Delhi have handed him the new ball end of their batting in the red-ball game.
A stand of 234 that set the innings
Arya and Badoni came together with Delhi three wickets down and added 234 for the fourth wicket, the partnership that decided the shape of the match.
Delhi closed the opening day on 381 for 4 from 84 overs, Arya already dismissed and his captain 115 not out from 149 balls.
Mathur, who walked in when Arya was bowled, was still there the next morning, and Gujarat had taken only four wickets in 115 overs.
Badoni goes on after the break
The second morning brought 146 runs in 31 overs and not a single wicket, Badoni moving from 115 to a double hundred and Mathur to within one run of a fifty.
It is the second first-class double century of Badoni's career, after 205 not out against Jharkhand in a Ranji Trophy match in November 2024.
Badoni, 26, has captained Delhi this season and plays his IPL cricket for Lucknow Super Giants, who signed him in 2022. He is yet to be capped by India.
Gujarat still waiting for a breakthrough
Hingrajia's wicket on the opening day remains Gujarat's most recent, and they have not taken one in the 31 overs bowled since.
Gujarat are yet to bat, with two days left in the match and Delhi's first innings still in progress.
The fixture is a round-two match in Elite, Group C, played over four days at Delhi's Palam ground.
Scorecard: Delhi 527 for 4 in 115 overs (Ayush Badoni 204 not out, Priyansh Arya 199, Sumit Mathur 49 not out; Manan Hingrajia 1 wicket) against Gujarat, day two, Palam B Stadium.
