Prabath Jayasuriya Reprimanded After Bat Incident in Colombo Test

Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for hitting the boundary wedges with his bat while walking back to the pavilion after his dismissal during the second Test against India in Colombo.

Jayasuriya, who was serving as Sri Lanka’s nightwatchman at No. 3, was dismissed LBW by Manav Suthar with the final delivery of the second day. Television footage also showed him throwing his gloves inside the dressing room.

The incident was classified as a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, relating to the misuse or abuse of cricket equipment and ground fixtures. The demerit point is Jayasuriya’s first in the last 24 months.

Jayasuriya is the third player to face disciplinary action during the Colombo Test. India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando were earlier fined 25% of their match fees and handed one demerit point each following an on-field confrontation on the opening day.

Jaiswal and Fernando were involved in the incident after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The two exchanged words before their heads made contact, prompting the match officials to intervene.

India currently lead the two-Test series 1-0, having won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs.
