Phil Simmons to Remain Bangladesh Head Coach Through 2027 ODI World Cup

Phil Simmons will continue as Bangladesh’s head coach until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup, after initially being appointed in an interim capacity until the 2025 Champions Trophy. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has now extended his contract, offering long-term stability to the national side.

“I’m honoured to have the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis,” said the 61-year-old Simmons. “There’s undeniable talent in this team, and I believe we can achieve something special together. I’ve already seen the passion and potential of these players—it’s inspiring, and I’m excited for the journey ahead.”

Simmons’ interim tenure brought mixed results. While Bangladesh won a Test and a T20I series in the West Indies, they exited early from the Champions Trophy after group-stage defeats to India and New Zealand.

“Despite the challenges, my time with this team has been incredibly fulfilling,” Simmons added. “The commitment and energy of the players have been outstanding, and I look forward to helping them reach new heights.”

With the contract extension, speculation around Simmons’ role is now resolved. As a result, he will no longer coach the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, where he had been head coach since December 2023.

Simmons was originally appointed Bangladesh’s head coach in October, the same day the BCB suspended Chandika Hathurusinghe. A veteran of international coaching, Simmons has led Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan, and had two stints with West Indies, famously guiding them to the T20 World Cup title in 2016. He is also one of just four coaches to have overseen more than 400 international matches.
