PBKS bowl first; Veer debuts as CSK post 209 at Chepauk

Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to bowl against Chennai Super Kings, but the decision was put under immediate pressure as the hosts produced a commanding batting performance to post 209 for 5 in their 20 overs.

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer opted to stick with an unchanged XI, trusting his bowling unit on what was expected to be a good batting surface. However, CSK’s top order came out with intent, capitalising on the conditions and setting the tone early.

CSK also handed a debut to promising allrounder Prashant Veer, while Matthew Short made way in the starting XI. The hosts, still without MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis due to injuries, relied on their reshaped batting unit—and it delivered.

The innings was built on a strong start from the top order, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson laying a solid foundation. The middle order then accelerated effectively, ensuring CSK maintained momentum through the latter stages.

Despite PBKS having quality options like Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, they struggled to contain the scoring, especially in the death overs.

The total of 209 puts CSK in a strong position, but with PBKS boasting a deep and explosive batting lineup, the chase remains very much alive. With power-hitters throughout their order, PBKS will back themselves to challenge the target on a batting-friendly Chepauk pitch.
