Pakistan endured a disastrous outing at Headingley, suffering an innings-and-103-run defeat against England in the opening Test of the series. The defeat also saw Pakistan enter the Test record books for an unwanted reason.
Pakistan lost their first wicket without a run on the scoreboard in both innings, becoming the first team in Test history to record the unwanted feat seven times.
In the first innings, Azan Awais was dismissed lbw by Ollie Robinson with Pakistan yet to score. The visitors were eventually bowled out for just 171 runs, giving England a significant advantage.
The second innings brought more disappointment for Pakistan. Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed without scoring, again leaving Pakistan at 0 for 1. England's bowlers continued to dominate, eventually dismissing Pakistan for only 135 runs.
England's victory was inspired by a sensational bowling performance from Ollie Robinson, who finished with match figures of 8 wickets for 80 runs and was named Player of the Match.
Robinson was well supported by Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, with England's pace attack repeatedly troubling Pakistan's batters and preventing them from building meaningful partnerships.
The result meant England wrapped up the Test inside three days, securing an innings-and-103-run victory and taking a 1–0 lead in the series.
Pakistan's latest collapse means they have now lost their first wicket at 0 in both innings of a Test on seven occasions, the most by any team.

While losing the opening wicket without a run is not unusual in Test cricket, doing so in both innings of the same match is a particularly damaging pattern. For Pakistan, the latest occurrence highlighted their struggles against England's disciplined bowling attack.
The victory also gave England valuable points in the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle, while Pakistan's heavy defeat left them at the bottom of the standings.
With the series still alive, Pakistan will have an opportunity to respond in the second Test. The teams are scheduled to meet at Lord's from August 27, where Pakistan will look to improve both their batting performance and their position in the series.
For England, meanwhile, the Headingley victory provides a perfect start—and another reminder of the effectiveness of their pace attack in home conditions.
