NZC backs NZ20 as future of domestic T20, seeks stronger women’s focus

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has thrown its support behind the proposed NZ20 competition as the future of domestic T20 cricket, marking a potential shift away from the long-running Super Smash after 21 years.

The decision, described as “in principle,” is not yet final, but signals NZC’s preferred direction following extensive consultation and review, including recommendations from the Deloitte Report. If implemented, NZ20 would replace the existing structure with a new, independently run franchise-style league operating under NZC’s oversight.

The move effectively ends any prospect of New Zealand teams joining Australia’s Big Bash Leagues, an option that had been under consideration. However, the decision has not been without internal friction, with board director Dion Nash resigning shortly after the announcement, citing differences over the organisation’s future direction.

A key condition from NZC is a stronger integration of the women’s game. Board chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon stressed that any new competition must ensure equal visibility and prominence for women’s cricket, aligning with NZC’s broader strategic goals. Regional representation, governance structure and ownership models are also central to ongoing discussions.

The NZ20 proposal, led by Sports Integrity Commission head Don MacKinnon and backed by figures including Stephen Fleming, is modelled on leagues like the Caribbean Premier League, where operational control sits with independent organisers under a governing body license.

Players have largely welcomed the move. Sophie Devine has endorsed NZ20 publicly, while Brooke Halliday highlighted its potential to provide local players with exposure similar to global franchise leagues. Jimmy Neesham also pointed to the success of competitions like The Hundred and SA20 in growing fan engagement and player development.

Originally targeted for a January 2027 launch, the timeline remains uncertain. For now, NZC has taken a significant first step—but the detailed work of shaping the league, and ensuring it serves both men’s and women’s cricket, still lies ahead.
