North Zone wiped out a deficit of 117 and moved 15 runs in front with eight wickets standing, turning a semi-final that Tilak Varma's unbeaten 116 appeared to have settled
North Zone have reached 132 for 2 in their second innings at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 in Bengaluru, a lead of 15 runs, after erasing the first-innings deficit that Tilak Varma had built almost single-handedly.
South Zone were bowled out for 312 in 100.3 overs in reply to North Zone's 195, a lead of 117 that looked commanding when it was established. Two sessions later it has gone, and the match has opened up again with two days still to play.
Varma, the South Zone captain, finished unbeaten on 116 from 250 balls with nine fours, his eighth first-class century and comfortably the innings of the match so far.

A captain's innings from 80 for 5
Varma came to the crease with his side in disarray and watched it get worse. South Zone were 80 for 5, the top order dismantled, and a first-innings lead looked unlikely, never mind a substantial one.
What followed was a 175-run stand for the sixth wicket with Shreyas Gopal that changed the shape of the contest. Varma batted through the rest of the innings, occupying the crease for 250 deliveries and scoring at barely more than two an over.
It was an innings built on refusal rather than strokeplay. South Zone had resumed the second morning on 40 for 2 and were still only 285 for 9 by stumps, with Varma on 106 and the tail for company. He added ten more on the third morning before the last wicket fell around him.

Brar and Arshdeep keep North Zone in it
Gurnoor Brar was the reason South Zone were ever in trouble, tearing through the top order on his way to 4-70. He removed the recognised batters early and left the innings dependent on its captain.
Arshdeep Singh, back in red-ball cricket and open about wanting a Test recall, took two wickets including that of Gopal, and it was his intervention that eventually ended the partnership that had rescued South Zone.

Kaverappa's four-for set the tone
North Zone had chosen to bat and were bowled out for 195 in 59.1 overs. Vidhwath Kaverappa took 4-66 from 15 overs and Tanay Thyagarajan 2-31.
Qamran Iqbal held the innings together with 76 from 182 balls, a stay of more than four hours, and Kanhaiya Wadhawan made 35. No one else passed 30, and the total looked well short of par at the time.

The third day changes everything
North Zone have batted with far more conviction second time round, losing only two wickets in 36.2 overs while wiping out the deficit. The pitch has flattened, the ball has softened, and South Zone's bowlers have found nothing like the assistance Brar enjoyed.
With a day and a half remaining, a lead of any substance would put North Zone in a strong position, since South Zone would be batting last on a surface into its fourth and fifth days. Equally, two quick wickets would leave North Zone barely ahead with their lower order exposed.

A final place at stake
The winner goes into the Duleep Trophy final. In the other semi-final, at the neighbouring ground, East Zone need 118 runs with all ten wickets standing to get there, so South Zone and North Zone are contesting the one place still genuinely in doubt.
Varma, named vice-captain of India's T20I side for the tours of Ireland and England earlier this year, now has eight first-class hundreds. This was the slowest of them, and on the evidence of the third day it may yet prove the most valuable.
