Nigeria hold their nerve to beat Zimbabwe and reach Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup

Nigeria secured a historic place at next year’s Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup after defeating Zimbabwe by four runs in a tense Africa Qualifier final in Dar es Salaam.

The victory capped an unbeaten campaign for Nigeria, who successfully defended a modest total of 98 to seal their qualification for the global tournament. They will now join South Africa as the second African team confirmed for next year's event, which will be hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal.

Nigeria’s captain Christabel Chukwuonye played an important role with the bat, scoring 21 runs from No. 6. In a low-scoring contest, every run proved valuable, particularly as Nigeria lost three wickets through run-outs during their innings.

After being restricted to 98 for 6, Nigeria knew they needed an exceptional bowling effort to defend the total. Usen Peace responded brilliantly, removing Zimbabwe's top-order batters and putting the chasing side under immediate pressure.

Zimbabwe struggled to recover from the early setbacks. Nigeria's bowlers continued to apply pressure throughout the innings, and the match went down to the final over. Despite the tension, Nigeria kept their composure and eventually bowled Zimbabwe out for 94 with just one ball remaining.

The four-run victory completed a memorable unbeaten qualifying campaign and earned Nigeria another opportunity to compete on the biggest stage in women's Under-19 cricket.

For captain Chukwuonye, the achievement carried enormous emotion. The 17-year-old, who has already represented Nigeria 40 times in T20 internationals, admitted that she cried after the final because of the significance of the victory.

Chukwuonye credited the team's coaching staff and players for remaining united throughout the tournament. She also praised her team-mates for staying calm under pressure, particularly during the decisive final over.

This will be Nigeria's second appearance at the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup. They also qualified for the 2025 edition, where they recorded two wins from three completed matches, with two other games washed out.

Their standout performance in that tournament came against New Zealand, when Nigeria produced a remarkable upset by defending just 65 runs in a rain-affected match.

Nigeria have now once again earned their place among the world's leading young women's cricket teams. Their qualification also adds to the growing representation of associate and emerging cricket nations at the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup.

Alongside Nigeria, USA, Samoa and UAE have secured qualification through their respective regional pathways. South Africa have already secured their place as the other African representative.

For Nigeria, the immediate focus will now shift from qualification to preparation. The World Cup will provide a much tougher challenge, but their unbeaten run in the African qualifier and their ability to defend a low total under extreme pressure will give the team plenty of confidence heading into the tournament.
