New Zealand’s new captain Amelia Kerr launched her leadership tenure in emphatic fashion, smashing a breathtaking maiden T20I century to power the White Ferns to a crushing 92-run win over Zimbabwe in Hamilton.

Asked to bat first, New Zealand piled up an imposing 202 for 1, recovering swiftly after the early dismissal of Georgia Plimmer for 33. From there, Kerr took complete command. Displaying authority and finesse in equal measure, she peppered the boundary with 19 fours in a scintillating unbeaten 101 off just 51 balls. She reached her landmark in dramatic fashion, scrambling back for two off the final delivery of the innings.

Kerr found an able ally in wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze, who contributed a fluent 66 not out from 50 balls. The pair stitched together an unbroken 159-run partnership for the second wicket — New Zealand’s highest ever for that wicket in women’s T20Is — completely overwhelming Zimbabwe’s attack.

In reply, Zimbabwe’s chase faltered almost immediately. Early strikes left them reeling, and although Beloved Biza battled hard for an unbeaten 49, the required rate spiralled beyond reach. The visitors finished on 110 for 4, well short of the daunting target.

To cap a memorable outing, Kerr also impressed with the ball, claiming 2 for 14 in a tidy four-over spell. In the absence of senior stars Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, the new skipper delivered a performance that signalled a bold new chapter for New Zealand cricket.
