Mitchell Owen described his international debut as “really special,” candidly admitting he felt more nerves while bowling than batting during Australia’s thrilling three-wicket win over the West Indies in the first T20I at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

The 23‑year‑old Tasmanian, typically an opener, was handed a finishing role at number six and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Bowling his very first over in international cricket, Owen made an immediate impact by dismissing West Indies’ in-form batter Shai Hope, who had just reached a half-century.

When it came time to bat, Owen seemed unflustered. He smashed a powerful 50 off just 27 balls, launching six huge sixes and playing with fearless confidence. Despite missing the first few balls, he said his plan was simple: “swing hard from ball one”—a mindset that ultimately proved match-winning.

Owen’s counter-attacking effort came in tandem with Cameron Green, as the duo shared a decisive 80-run stand in only 40 balls, rescuing Australia from a shaky 4/78 and shifting the momentum completely. Green also played a blazing knock of 51 off 26 balls, providing a perfect complement to Owen’s aggression.

Speaking after the match, Owen said he was “lucky” to find his rhythm early and praised Green for maintaining calm throughout their partnership.

“We kept each other nice and calm and just stuck to our processes,” he said.

Beyond his batting exploits, Owen etched his name into the record books by becoming the first player ever to score a half-century and take a wicket on T20I debut for Australia—a feat that places him in elite company.
