Australia fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League 2026 season after aggravating a hamstring injury during the domestic One-Day Cup final earlier this month.
Ellis, who was retained by Chennai Super Kings for INR 2 crore, suffered the setback while captaining Tasmania against New South Wales in Hobart on March 11. He bowled five overs in the rain-affected final, returning 2 for 26, but is believed to have worsened a previous hamstring issue during the match.
The 31-year-old’s absence is a significant blow for Chennai, although he had limited opportunities in the previous season, featuring in just one game in 2025. Overall, Ellis has played 17 IPL matches, the majority coming with Punjab Kings between 2021 and 2024.
With Ellis sidelined, Chennai will rely on their remaining pace options, including overseas quicks Matt Henry, Jamie Overton and Zak Foulkes, alongside Indian bowlers such as Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Choudhary. Allrounders Shivam Dube and Aman Khan also provide additional seam-bowling depth.
Despite the setback, Chennai have received a boost with the arrival of Sanju Samson, who recently joined the squad ahead of the new season.
Chennai Super Kings will open their campaign on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, before facing Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in their early fixtures.
Ellis’ injury continues a frustrating run for the fast bowler, raising concerns about his fitness management ahead of a busy international calendar, while also forcing Chennai to reshuffle their bowling plans ahead of the tournament.
