Namibia will co-host the 2027 World Cup without a guaranteed place in it, and the fifth position that keeps them inside the qualifying pathway is what they put on the line against the United Arab Emirates in Dallas
Namibia and the United Arab Emirates open a three-team ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 series at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Saturday, the first of six fixtures the United States are hosting in Texas until 13 October.
Namibia go into the match fifth in the League 2 table on 28 points from 32 matches, the last of the positions that leads anywhere in the qualifying pathway. The UAE are eighth and last on 18 points from 28 matches.
Scotland, the United States and the Netherlands have already taken the three places that lead straight to the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which leaves the rest of the league playing for the two spots behind them.
The 2027 World Cup runs from 2 October to 21 November that year in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the first time Namibia have staged a senior global event.
South Africa and Zimbabwe were handed automatic places as hosts. Namibia were not, because they are not a full member of the ICC, and so must come through the same qualifying route as every other associate side.
Eight further places were settled by the ICC ODI rankings on 30 September 2026, going to Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The last four will be decided at the Qualifier in February and March 2027.
Namibia are ranked 18th in the ODI table, well outside the eight places that were settled on ranking alone.
League 2 sends its top three to the Qualifier and its fourth and fifth-placed sides to the Qualifier Play-off. Sixth, seventh and eighth leave the pathway altogether.
Oman hold fourth on 31 points from 28 matches. Behind Namibia, Canada have 25 points and Nepal 24, both from 32 matches, so three points separate Namibia from the first side outside the places.
The UAE have played four fewer matches than Namibia, Canada and Nepal, which is the only reason an eighth-placed team on 18 points is still in the argument at all.
Namibia are led by Gerhard Erasmus and coached by Craig Williams, and have spent the cycle in the middle of a table they finished fourth in last time.
The UAE named a 15-man squad for the trip, captained by Harpreet Singh Bhatia and coached by Lalchand Rajput, the former India manager.
Two players were called up for the first time: Ayaan Misbah, a 17-year-old top-order batter who has represented the UAE at Under-19 level, and Awais Ali Shah, a left-arm spinner.
All-rounder Basil Hameed returns to the one-day side having last played an ODI in November 2024.
All six fixtures are at Grand Prairie Stadium, which staged matches at the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, and each of the three sides plays four of them.
The UAE are down for 3, 5, 9 and 11 October, meeting Namibia twice and the hosts twice. Every match begins at 10:00 local time.
Harpreet took the captaincy earlier in 2026, and this is the first block of League 2 cricket in which his side can make up ground on the teams above them.
A second October round sends Canada and Nepal to Oman, and League 2 is scheduled to finish in December 2026.
The Qualifier that follows, from 26 February to 21 March 2027, produces four teams for the World Cup proper. For Namibia, qualifying for a tournament they are staging depends on holding a position they currently lead by three points.
Namibia and the United Arab Emirates meet again at Grand Prairie Stadium on 9 October, with the tri-series running to 13 October.
