Namibia Cricket Chief Calls for 'Bigger Picture' View on ODI World Cup Revamp

Namibia Cricket president Rudie van Vuuren has urged Associate nations to look beyond the immediate disappointment surrounding the revamped 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup format, arguing that cricket's long-term growth increasingly lies in the expansion of the T20 game.

Speaking during the launch of the 2027 ODI World Cup in Johannesburg, van Vuuren acknowledged the concerns raised by several Associate members but said the changes should be viewed within the broader context of cricket's evolving global landscape."If you understand the bigger picture, it makes sense. We must put it into context. If you look at viewership numbers or the popularity of ODI cricket, we don't really know where it is going. I do see more opportunities for Associates in the T20 world," van Vuuren said.

Associates Question New World Cup Format

The ICC's revised format for the 2027 ODI World Cup has drawn criticism after the introduction of a Super Series stage, in which two teams will be eliminated after playing only two matches.

Several Associate players and administrators believe the structure reduces the value of a qualification process that often spans several years.

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said qualifying for the World Cup should provide emerging teams with a genuine opportunity to compete against the game's strongest nations."We all accept that you have to earn the right to be there, but we also want qualification to provide a real opportunity to compete on the biggest stage," Erasmus said.

Former Netherlands captain Scott Edwards questioned whether the new format aligns with the ICC's stated ambition of growing the game globally, while Scotland captain Richie Berrington called for greater consultation with Associate members before major structural changes are introduced.

Van Vuuren Sees T20 as Growth Engine

Despite the criticism, van Vuuren believes the ICC's long-term strategy is centred on expanding opportunities through T20 cricket, which he sees as the format best placed to accelerate the sport's global reach.

He suggested future ICC funding models are likely to place greater emphasis on T20 competitions and development pathways for Associate nations."The funding mechanisms will change towards T20 World Cups. I believe more investment will go into getting Associate nations into high-level cricket through the T20 format," he said.

Qualification Pathway Set for Further Changes

The ICC has already confirmed a significant overhaul of T20 World Cup qualification beginning with the 2028 edition.

Under the revised system, the existing regional qualification structure will be replaced by a single global qualifying tournament, with Associate teams competing for places based on worldwide performance rather than regional allocation.

Van Vuuren described the new model as an interim step and indicated that further refinements could be introduced before the 2030 T20 World Cup.

ICC Planning the Next Phase

The governing body is currently reviewing the future structure of international cricket, with a strategic report prepared by global consultancy McKinsey expected to be presented at the ICC Board meetings in November.

The ICC is also expected to finalise the 2027-2031 Future Tours Programme (FTP) during the same period, outlining the international calendar for the next four-year cycle.

Alongside those discussions, proposals to expand the World Test Championship remain under consideration, with countries such as Zimbabwe among those linked with potential inclusion in future editions.

Focus on Long-Term Growth

While acknowledging the debate surrounding the ODI World Cup format, van Vuuren remains optimistic about cricket's future and believes the sport is moving towards broader global expansion, particularly following its return to the Olympic programme."ICC chairman Jay Shah has a big vision to grow cricket into the biggest sport in the world. To achieve that, Associate nations must have more opportunities, and I believe the game is moving in that direction."

Although the revised ODI World Cup structure continues to divide opinion across the Associate game, discussions over qualification pathways, funding models and international opportunities are expected to remain central to the ICC's long-term plans for growing the sport worldwide.
