Mitchell Hay, Muhammad Abbas Among Four New Faces in New Zealand’s 2025-26 Central Contracts

New Zealand Cricket has unveiled its 20-player central contract list for the 2025–26 season, featuring four fresh faces who have impressed in white-ball formats. Wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay, explosive allrounder Muhammad Abbas, fast bowler Zak Foulkes, and legspinner Adithya Ashok have all received their first national retainers, signaling a generational shift in the Blackcaps setup.

Hay and Abbas burst onto the scene during the ODI series against Pakistan earlier this year, with Hay scoring an unbeaten 99 and Abbas blasting the fastest fifty on one-day debut with a whirlwind 24-ball effort. Foulkes, already capped in T20Is and ODIs, continues to climb the ranks, while Ashok, after a few early appearances in 2023, impressed during New Zealand A’s recent tour of Bangladesh.

Notably, Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson are not on the list, with ongoing discussions about their casual playing arrangements. Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, and Josh Clarkson have been dropped, while Tim Southee has retired.

The contract panel, led by head coach Gary Stead, who has stepped down from his white-ball role, factored in upcoming commitments like the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. With only five Tests scheduled in the next cycle—including two non-WTC matches in Zimbabwe—the focus is clearly on shorter formats and squad regeneration.

NZC CEO Scott Weenink highlighted the promise of the new picks, saying, “These players have shown they can compete at the highest level… their hunger to represent the Blackcaps is exciting.” The updated list reflects New Zealand’s efforts to embrace emerging talent while preparing for a transitional phase in their cricketing future.
